The world lost Joel Olson 5 years ago today. In an age of polarized views on race and immigration, Joel will forever be with us in his words, years ahead of their time. Please do yourself a favor and dive in. In the 80's I celebrated the day an issue of Hippycore showed up in my mailbox. IIn the 90's, I was thrilled to work alongside him in Minneapolis as activists and in the Profane Existence collective. I was also in a band with his wife Audrey Creed who I'm happy to have closer in my life again. I strongly recommend the links to his "Race Traitor" articles therein. Foreshadowing a larger fight, Joel Olson spearheaded much of the struggle against Arizona's anti-immigration bills before his passing.
Oddly, today also marks 3 years since I crashed my bike at 2 am in a rainstorm. Someone found me unconscious with skull and shoulder fractures and I awoke hours later in the trauma ward of Woodhull Hospital. It rained 6 inches that day, perhaps a call of mourning to those not as lucky as I.
